In This House explores the home as a crucial space where identity is first formed, values are shaped, and self-expression is nurtured. This exhibition brings together the work of seven artists who delve into themes of identity, labor, rest, family legacy, and craft, all while viewing the domestic space as both a personal and cultural sphere of influence. In these homes, individuals are free to exist authentically, and it is within these intimate environments that the seeds of creativity are often sown.
For many Black creatives across the United States, the home functions as their first gallery. Walls filled with heirloom quilts, photographs, garments, and locally sourced art become a family’s visual narrative, preserving the history of those who inhabit these spaces. This foundation of cultural artifacts provides young artists with early inspiration, influencing their artistic journeys and shaping their unique voices.
The seven artists featured in In This House—Cydney Camp, Bree Gant, Deja Malani Jones, Qualeasha Wood, Morgan Bouldes, and Laura Gidson—draw from these domestic settings, creating works that trace their artistic lineage back to these formative spaces. By examining personal narratives, ancestral connections, and selfhood, they reveal how the home continues to serve as a dynamic source of influence in contemporary artistic practice.
This exhibition is part of ArtMile, a digital art week for the Detroit art community, highlighting the ongoing significance of home as a site of both artistic and cultural expression.
