"In This House"

"In This House" considers the home as our first space where we learn critical thinking; a place where we learn our voice and the things that we value. Within that space, we are allowed to exist freely. The artists presented examine ideas of identity, rest, labor, family legacy, and craft, all while using the domestic space as a site of influence.

Across the US and within the domestic spaces of black femmes, the walls of the home become a young artist’s first gallery, a place that could be recognized as a family museum. It displays family heirlooms of quilts, passed-down garments, photos of yesteryear, paintings bought from local artists, swap meets, and community gatherings. This is where art is first seen in crucial early years, fostering the artist in their development.

The 7 artists selected for Art Mile are exploring artistic techniques that were born in this space and could be found on the walls, exploring notions of personal narrative, family, ancestral lineage, and selfhood.

“Box of 24”

What does it mean to memorialize the safe spaces in which queer, black bodies have existed? Box of 24 shares the work of Chicago-based artist Derrick Woods-Morrow, who aims to reconcile the histories of queer bodies and their relationship to land. Centering around locations historically used for cruising by queer men of color, Woods-Morrow explores the significance of their existence from the 1970s to the present. By collecting elements of these cruising spaces—such as sand from black and queer-friendly beaches and parks in New York and New Orleans and bricks from the George Washington monument in the South Side of Chicago—he aims to immortalize the unwritten history of the people that occupied these spaces. In an alchemical transformation that crystallizes the bricks by fusing them with the sand, there is a transmuting of the past, present and future— unifying them into a singular body. Box of 24 consists of collected, crystallized sand and brick, a recorded performance by Woods-Morrow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and photographs from Fire Island, New York and Lincoln Beach in New Orleans.

“Oh, Maker”

Within the current social and political climate we’re found looking backward as a way to find answers for today's problems in America. “Oh, Maker” explores the work of 7 artists who through the act of re-appropriating materials are looking at the history of trauma on American Soil, the act of rebellion, as well the narrative of black women, and families. These artists are building on these conversations in their work. Using mix materials, visual language, and archives as a starting source to re-appropriate materials used to aid conversations about America today.

“+”  (pronounced Positive) is an exhibition project that sheds light on ideas around Desire, Sex Positivity, HIV and it's Prevention. The Goal of this exhibition is to open up space for dialog around topics that are deemed taboo in marginalized communities. Interested in removing the stigma and toxic thinking around the idea of HIV, but also how desire, and sex positivity relates to HIV and it’s prevention. 

This exhibition will be in conjunction with CPAN, and World Aids Day Detroit, taking place at The Baltimore Gallery, opened on Dec 1st 2017 (World Aids Day)

"Museum Of Contemporary Art on INSTAGRAM (MOCA.IG)"

(MOCA.IG) is a digital museum designated for the social Media Platforms Instagram, and Facebook. Formed from an interest in curating I formed (MOCA.IG) to play the role of a Fictional Museum, exploring and showcasing contemporary art work of the African, and Latinx Diaspora. Through This on going project I plan to offer a one week instagram take over (Residency) to one emerging artist or curator every month. 

I think it's important to provide accessible art to art lovers. The work shown on (MOCA.IG) spans from photography, sculpture, performance, video, sound, painting, ceramic. etc
